THE MISSION & VISION

Founded in 2026, the Monterey Institute Association serves the Institute's community across its entire history...starting as the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies, later the Monterey Institute of International Studies, and most recently the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. Throughout this document, "the Institute" or “MIIS” refers to that continuous community under all its names and any future iteration.Mission - What we do, day to day
To actively connect the MIIS community (graduates, staff, faculty, and other partners) across the globe and throughout their careers through digital communities, real world events, and continuing education We nurture and promote professional networks to share opportunities,and leverage expertise to collaboratively address some of the world's most outstanding challenges. We support MIA members and partners in advancing understanding, promoting peace, and driving change toward a more just world.Vision - The future we're working toward
An active and collaborative lifelong global community of MIIS alumni, faculty, staff and friends who keep the Institute's practical, peace-building mission alive in the world by supporting each other to lead and serve in global security, sustainability, development, education, business, diplomacy, and language services.Values - How we work
Connection: We exist first to keep our community linked across years, programs, and continents. Relationships are our most valuable asset, and we steward them deliberately.Mutual support: We open doors, make introductions, mentor, and show up for one another professionally and personally, which is the practical solidarity our community is known for.Practical impact and service to a more just world: We strengthen institutions, improve conditions, and deepen human connections. And, we advance understanding, promote peace, and drive change; our success is measured by the good our members do in the world.Global perspective: We value the cultural diversity, language, and cross-border understanding that defines our community and informs our work.Stewardship of legacy: We are the public face to safeguard the identity, heritage, and spirit of the Institute community for those who came before and those still to come.Activities: We provide networking and professional development, publishing, platforming, and mentoring.

CURRENT STATUS

For the past few months, the volunteer Operating Team of MIA has been working hard to make the vision a reality.
We have filed formation paperwork and are working to create this organization as a 501c(6) nonprofit.
